Rainbow children
In Denmark, the term ‘Rainbow Children’ is most often used when talking about a family with children that does not necessarily match the traditional, heteronormative nuclear family with father, mother and children. Internationally, the term ‘Rainbow Baby’ is used about the children born after a miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. That is the comparison referred to in this post.
The term comes from the comparison with the meaning of a rainbow after a cold, violent and rainy storm. The bright, colorful and clear rainbow gives hope. It reminds us not to give up, because the world and nature are a beautiful place. The rainbow is often much appreciated when it is compared to the storm - the grief - that one has just faced before it came out.
